Growing up the middle child of a charming, disabled Ivy League lawyer in Puerto Rico taught me an important lesson: When there’s a will, there’s a way. A bilingual home, I watched Wonder Woman and 21 Jump Street after the eight o’clock telenovela, Los Ricos Tambien Lloran. Studying acting at the American Conservatory Theater helped me understand character, objective and motivation. Realizing there were no parts in Hollywood for educated tall bilingual Latinas, I wrote and produced my play, The Princess Within, about the personalities I developed with the different men I met.

That play started my writing career, penning award shows, sitcoms, telenovelas, Port Charles and projects for ABC. My mother’s battle with cancer took me away from the business. A year later, my language skillset brought me to translation and working for the DEA as an intelligence analyst taking down cartels. My adrenaline-pumped five- year experience with the DEA was heartbreaking, thrilling and humbling — and listening to how people of all races, ages and backgrounds really speak helped my writing.

I channel my intense life experiences into what I write. From domestic abuse on East Los High and winning
a Sentinel Award, to my interactions with the Mexican audience on Noches con Platanito, to consulting on NBC’s groundbreaking scripted show, El Vato. I’m grateful to be bicultural and bilingual. I create content that resonates in both markets. I’m on the pulse of what works in both.
